it’s fucking awful seeing lesbians telling me not to use ‘queer’. “be careful, it’s a slur” “pls tag omg” “q-slur” etc.
That rhetoric is so fucking hurtful.
Please. For the love of god. have some fucking empathy. This is my word. it’s my identity. I’ve marched under banners that read it for more than two decades. I’ve been Queer for nearly 25 years. Stop passing around bullshit about how it’s dangerous and hurtful and just blacklist the word if you don’t like it.
When I call myself ‘queer’, I am not using that word as a slur. I am using that word as I’ve always known it: as a strong word that unites our community in our fight for equal rights. Rights that you possibly now enjoy were fought for by queer people under queer banners. Please stop telling me I’m calling myself a slur, because when that word is said by me, it is not as a slur.
It’s like death by 1000 cuts: constantly being told to be “””careful”””” by “”””helpful””” people. it’s not helpful. It’s hurtful and oppressive as fuck. Stop spreading rhetoric about my own word and just BLACKLIST it if you don’t like it, and encourage other people who don’t like it to do the same!!!
I’m not telling you not to call yourself a lesbian or a dyke, although I’ve had those words yelled at me while people chased and spat on me, so on’t tell me not to call myself queer just because you’ve had that experience with MY word.
Just. Blacklist. the. word. If you don’t like it. Stop policing how queer people use our own words.
