To all of my california friends who can’t miss fireflies because they haven’t ever seen them.

^ what? do they not have fireflies in CA??????????

Nope! They don’t really live west of the rockies.  The first time I saw them in Ohio, I thought I was hallucinating.

when i was sixteen or seventeen, i went to a music summer camp at a college in ohio; there were kids from all over the country there, including a pair of girls from california. one night, they accidentally got the fire department called to campus by excitedly running out of the dorm through what they didn’t realize was an emergency exit to go chase the fireflies they’d just seen for the first time out their window.

in retrospect i realize now that the feeling that elicited in me was me falling in love just a little bit with the both of them.
