Artist warning: I got invited via IG to submit art to a magazine which
then asked me for $30 for “entry.” I’ve done my rounds in prestigious
galleries, juried shows, art competitions & magazine features. There
are lots of valid things in the art world that require money.Magazines aren’t one of them, unless you’re placing an ad (check the
circulation to make sure the magazine is actually widely available
before placing ads). Save your money for good juried competitions or
booth fees for very good art shows or for better paper or more paints.Don’t let online mags lead you to believe that “exposure” is worth $30. I
used to make my living at this— maybe one day I’ll write up a post
about what I learned, if anyone wants it. For now, steer clear of
opportunistic folks making quick bucks off the hopes of aspiring
artists. And if this sounds a LOT like a thread I recently posted on Twitter about writing,
yes. It turns out there are people willing to make a buck off aspiring
creatives in every medium. TRUST NO ONE
