i know everybody is about irish catholic steve rogers which is fine, truly, but hear me out — magen david is usually translated to “star of david”, referring to the jewish star, but magen literally means shield… and who do we know that uses a shield with a star on it

well, if you insist…
jonathan and david were literally in love, they made a bunch of really over-the-top-extra vows to each other, every other line is like “and jonathan made a vow to david because he loved him like his own soul”. when jonathan ends up dying, it provokes david into the most gut-wrenched mourning ever seen in the bible.
it’s worth noting that david only becomes king because jonathan (and his father, the king) are both dead. so he ascends the throne almost as a continuation of their family, as if he’d joined the royalty through marriage.
bucky plays a similar role in steve’s life, would follow him anywhere, made all kinds of vows to him (to the end of the line, for example), and ends up dying in battle… which prompts steve to take up a mantle bigger than himself and rise to glory in his honor.
