When Zuko is a child, his mother wakes him up in the middle of the night, picks him up in her arms, and runs away. 

They keep running. 

He’s sixteen when the strangest group of people he’s ever seen track him down. “We need your help!” a Water Tribe girl says. “The Avatar needs a firebending teacher. We – we heard you do that. Teach firebending, that is.” 

It’ll be easy, his mother had said. It’s good money, she’d said. Something low profile and small, she’d said. 

He can’t wait to see what she says when he brings this group home.
