In 1965, Norene Gilletz was among a group of young housewives who decided to publish a cookbook on a whim.
The women, all members the same B’nai Brith Chapter in Montreal, were good cooks and bakers, but they had no experience writing recipes. They also knew nothing about publishing.
Nevertheless when Second Helpings, Please! finally hit the stores in 1968 it was a huge success. In fact, the book became one of Canada’s best selling cookbooks. By 2008, 175,000 copies had sold worldwide. Now, 50 years later, the 77-year-old grandmother of five is launching Norene’s Kitchencast, a podcast where she’ll be sharing her expertise on kosher food and Jewish culinary traditions.
