The Black students of MSD High in Parkland have finally been given the chance to speak out and surprise! They disagree with the platform being pushed by their white peers. Their flags are things we’ve (Black people online) been saying for weeks. Advocating for more police in schools and for a stronger police force is Shitty for Students of Color, particularly BLACK STUDENTS.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/29/us/parkland-school-black-students-trnd/index.html

I also want to add that while the nonblack student leaders at the front have been trying to be ‘intersectional’ and give voices to Black kids affected by gun violence, the Black kids in their very own space went largely ignored. These Black students don’t have the clout or organizational connections to be put on a national stage and they are now asking to be listened to. Their voices are valuable as Black students directly affected by BOTH school shooting violence AND police brutality/state violence.

I’m confused, as I hadn’t heard any of the Parkland students advocating for more police in schools or stronger police forces in general, just seriously overdue reform of gun laws. I did think it was strange that none of the ‘featured’ students was African-American, but chalked it up to weird Florida demographics and that the kids all seem to have been in debate club together, forming their own tight-knit unit.

also, did y’all even watch the March at all? there were a lot of black kids. afaik, none of the kids were advocating for stronger police presence in schools. they just want a ban on assault rifles. y’all really need to do more research.

As someone in the notes already pointed out after the Russian spies on Tumblr  I am kinda wary of tactics that want to divide these kids or any of these movements. From what I know the Parkland kids are not advocating for police in schools and it’s mostly the media/government who are pushing the white kids and trying to divide the movement while these kids are pointing out how the media is ignoring their black peers. Also if you click the CNN link it actually states:

“David Hogg said the media had made a big mistake ‘not giving black students a voice’ after the shooting rampage.”

and the black kids actually say

“We are proud to say that those who are in the front are doing a great job, but we also have so much to say.”

“The police are making their own rules and are turning our school into a police state,”

So like nothing in the link talks about them disagreeing with their peers just that they’re ignored and misrepresented. And nothing in it states that the movement is pushing for more police.

This is misinformation!

I just want to let you know I’m blocking every stupid asshole that insinuates that me being critical of something because of my perspective as a Black woman, means I’m a Russian bot meant to sow discord.

Y’all do noooooot read!!!

EDIT: the reason y’all are confused is because you get all your news from Tumblr and gifs and photo sets and don’t ducking follow the stories close enough. If you were, you would’ve KNOWN that a set of suggestions including what I talked about in the OP have been published.

the fact that no one on this site reads the actual news actually explains a lot about this russian psyop hysteria

I read the statement of the Parkland group and follow them on twitter. I haven’t seen anything about them wanting more armed guards.

I think the problem is people are assuming all of the students of parkland to be in lockstep or saying the same things (or all of them to be representative of the March) and they simply aren’t.. I’m assuming the Parkland students “wanting more armed guards” thing is about this article by their school paper

however, that is NOT what is on the list of goals in the Mission statement for March For Our Lives

1. Universal, comprehensive background checks
2. Bringing the ATF into the 21st century with a digitized, searchable database
3. Funds for the Center for Disease Control to research the gun violence epidemic in America
4. High-capacity magazine ban
5. Assault weapons ban

I think both things can be true. The students in connection with March for Our Lives are not proponents of more school security or criminalizing mental health – and also don’t seem connected to the article in The Guardian. However, they are still the classmates of black students in Parkland, and that’s still an issue.

Another layer: a lot of the students who are working with the March for our Lives are Jewish or Latine, and I think it’s important to remember that a school that is 40% Jewish was attacked by an antisemitic white supremacist.  A lot of these students may look “white” for all intents and purposes, except for the fact that they were targeted by the ire of a man who thought Jewish people “wanted to destroy the world.” [and also whiteness]. In this case, I think it becomes a little more complex than only white peers vs black students, especially since many of the vocal students in the March/Never Again related activities are Jewish or not white (i.e. Deitsch is Jewish, Kasky’s Jewish, Gonzalez is latine – the students who came up with the idea of “ Parents Promise to Kids,” Buchwald and Hibshman, are also both Jewish).

&  let’s be honest – some of this extra “media attention” seems to come from the fact that the press is trying to cover the presence of media conspiracies, and….a lot of them center on attacking Jewish people. We weren’t even an hour out before people started blaming Jews: “Start looking for [Jewish] numerology and crisis actors.”

All of these things can be important in different ways without canceling each other out, and the fact is that there is not a single unified MSD High group front, not even amongst the kids who have received media backlash or ire. Some of the teenagers from MSD proposed bad policies which negatively impact all students who are black, latine, or visibly muslim, etc.
