I think a lot of people don’t realize that when lesbians refer to themselves or lesbians as a group understood as ugly dykes or variations of the term, it’s often less about perceived physical attractiveness and more about lesbians as a phantom psychological horror of the worst thing a woman can be. Not wanting to be with men is framed as something that *makes* you ugly and worthless, it means you must have an inherent personality defect, some inherent trauma, some issue with your mom and dad, something made you this way to be the worst thing a woman could possibly be.

I don’t personally find myself ugly. But I understand myself as an ugly subject under patriarchy for being willfully disobedient

That’s like when people, especially straight men say they find individual lesbians attractive it just misses the entire fucking point. It’s not about whether a lesbian measures up to your individual measures of desirability it’s about lesbianism in and of itself being seen as a site of undesirability. The patriarchy endlessly perpetuates this as the worst thing your daughter could become, image of a butch lesbian is obscured as monstrous, ugly and worthless because she is transgressive, because she refuses the proper sexual subject choice (men) and because she refuses to perform proper gender (heterosexual femininity)

I just know so many lesbians that have this idea of ugliness psychologically ingrained in them. It doesn’t matter how feminine, conventionally attractive or otherwise advantaged social positions you hold, lesbianism will always be associated with ugliness because we are incorrect women and the way to discourage incorrect womanhood is to paint it as ugly.

This is the best most well thought out post I have ever seen
